We are your numbers people.

People

We are united through our love of numbers, and it shows in our work and our company culture. Precision in everything that we do, having strong communication skills, and building trusting relationships with our clients is how we do business. Our team is dedicated to getting things done the right way.

For Aaron, precision is something that just comes natural. Coming from a family of engineers and problem solvers taught him early on that he could apply these techniques to help solve financial issues. At his core, Aaron loves the challenge of arriving at a solution, which he pairs with his passion for small business. Because the tax landscape is always changing, finding solutions that stem from the economy, politics, or technology keep Aaron in a constant state of learning.

“My father taught me the importance of always having a good work ethic. He would say, ‘You have to work hard to play hard.’”

The most rewarding part of Aaron’s job is consulting with clients and providing the data they need to help grow their business. It’s not always about simply following the guidelines, but using high levels of personal judgement for a rapidly changing tax code.

“I’m motivated by the pride I have for the service that I provide to others. I view my work as an extension of myself, and I seek to improve on that each day.”

When he’s not in the office, Aaron is either traveling to new parts of the world, taking in a film, or strumming on his guitar. When on the home front, you may see him on foot putting more miles under his feet in a half marathon or a relay race. It’s safe to say that Aaron likes to be on the move.

Ezra understands that the concepts of accounting can be challenging. However, and that being said, there’s nothing more rewarding to him than reaching the finish line for a client. He's currently gaining experience in the construction, automotive, and real estate industries, in order to establish himself as a valuable resource for a variety of businesses.

“I’ve always lived by the notion that there’s no substitute for a desire to learn.”

The day to day aspects of Ezra’s job require an exceptional eye for detail. Bookkeeping, balance sheets and data entry contribute directly to the other members of his team and help them to do their jobs more efficiently and effectively.

Outside the office, Ezra is most likely finding a rhythm. Either by tuning his ears to one of his favorite bluegrass ballads, or by finding a nearby court to blaze new trails and practice his jump shot. Surrounded by a variety of family and friends, he is never far from two of his favorite things; rhythm and balance.

“I’m a Trailblazers devotee, and bluegrass music is the best!”

Madeline would call herself a “Jill of all trades” with a passion for helping others. It’s no surprise, then, that after earning a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Linguistics, she immediately began setting her sights on the world of accounting. With a client base that consists of mostly small to medium-sized businesses, she enjoys knowing that she can dually help them save money and grow in their respective industries.

“After graduating, I stumbled on to an opportunity to learn about bookkeeping. What I didn’t count on was falling in love with it so quickly!”

Madeline’s day to day routine can sometimes involve learning about the various nuances of her client’s industries, and then bringing them all into focus. Becoming an expert in things such as child birth, horse boarding, or fast food wasn’t necessarily on her radar when she accepted her position. However, this has helped fuel her passion for an ever-changing financial landscape.

When she’s not crunching numbers, Madeline can be found in one of the region’s breathtakingly beautiful camp sites during the summer, or mountainside in the winter with her snowboard close at hand. Whether on foot, in the water, or cycling down the road, she has an insatiable appetite for the outdoors. When the need for rest and recharge arises, you’ll most likely see her nestled into an armchair at her favorite coffeehouse immersed in a good book.

“Be consistent and be reliable and you’re halfway there.

For Jaileene, a genuine desire to help people is something that’s just inherent to her. In and around the office, you’ll find her looking for the next best way to keep everything running smoothly. With ten years of experience under her belt in a variety of professional service firms, in combination with education from Western Business College, she’s the person to turn to when you need a helping hand.

“My family and I are incredibly active in our community. We love what all organizations uniquely highlight, and how they bring awareness to areas that we might not have known about.”

Outside the office, you’re likely to find Jaileene spending time with her family, either on foot or on a paddle board. She’s also an active volunteer in the local school districts and various community organizations including: Backpack Buddies, Kids Closet, Doernbecher Children's Hospital, Project Access Now, Habitat for Humanity, Shake It Till We Make It, and Veterans Of America, just to name a few.

You may also find Jaileene with sandpaper and a stain brush in hand looking to turn something old into something new.

“There’s always something new to be discovered beneath the surface. I enjoy refurbishing and restoring furniture pieces.”

Kara is more than the smiling face you see behind the front desk. She’s the one who helps our firm find balance. Although somewhat new to the accounting industry, she has over 15 years of experience as an administrative assistant. After living in Buenos Aires, Argentina during her high school years, Kara studied business at Portland Community College before settling in to her professional role in her home town.

Those who cross Kara’s path would describe her as a pleasant person who’s always interested in the story that other’s have to tell. She values integrity, responsibility, and relationships and takes the trust her clients place in her very seriously.

“I strive to make our clients feel important, valued and special when they call or stop in. I want them to feel like they are being well taken care of when they reach out to me.”

Kara enjoys the constant readjusting of priorities throughout any given business day and always stays focused on the details of a project.

“It can be challenging, yet it’s very fulfilling when all the pieces come together!”

In her free time, Kara can be found on her favorite couch in a local bookstore with a warm cup of coffee, hiking at various places throughout the State, or solving one of many clues to help find her way out of an escape room. No matter what she’s doing, she’s likely to be accompanied by her husband and three grown children, or a close group of friends.

“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.”

Diana Sykes [photo]

Diana Sykes Enrolled Agent (EA)

According to Diana, she’s just “another employee” at Plus Minus Accounting. As everyone else puts it, she brings the glue, spirit, and plenty of brain power to the operation.

“I chose accounting because I loved numbers, but I could have gone into social work because I love people too.” In the end, accounting provided the best of both worlds—a chance to help people by providing key solutions that affect many aspects of their lives.

As a licensed tax consultant, Diana is a trusted, go-to partner for dozens of businesses and individuals. She provides the attention, perspective and solutions they need, especially when the waters are choppy.

“These are stressful times for lots of people. Some are selling, others are shuttering, and many people feel overwhelmed about their taxes. I’m attached to all of my clients. I want to see them succeed, no matter how long we’ve worked with them.”

In a world full of big dreamers, Diana doesn’t mind slogging through the minutia. In fact, she enjoys it.

“I love to dig around the details see what’s really going on. My clients appreciate knowing I’ll get my hands scuffed on their behalf.”

You might spot Diana just about anywhere throughout the state of Oregon, from a day-hike in the Gorge, to a Blazers game, or just browsing around the mall. And if you’re lost when you bump into her, don’t worry—she’ll point you in the direction you need to go.

Stephan Sykes Certified Public Accountant (CPA)

The rules are always changing in the world of accounting and taxation, not necessarily for the taxpayer’s benefit. To stay ahead, Stephan Sykes, CPA, owner of Plus Minus Accounting, operates his business by the types of rules that support his clients.

“First, we will always have the tools it takes to keep on the cutting edge.” It’s a credo he first encountered in the Marine Corps. “As a Marine, you’re told that if you bring the grit and the drive to succeed, you’ll always have what you need to get it done. That’s how we do things around here too.”

As for the grit and drive, Stephan and his team bring those essential ingredients as well. “We always battle for our clients. If they’re in the dark when they come to us, we’ll get them through. No one should feel lost at sea with their taxes.”

The entire Plus Minus environment is built around the concept of people helping people, not just crunching numbers. This core principle has been in place since Stephan opened his business more than 20 years ago.

“This is a critical point for people. Many of our older clients are facing retirement, while younger clients are jumping into the game for the first time. We’re a solution for everyone, no matter where they are in the cycle.”

While Stephan doesn’t have tons of free time, he does his best to explore the world. Recent excursions have seen him trek coastlines, countrysides and mountain ranges in the U.S. and abroad. If you see him on the trail, chances are he’ll have at least one classic book with him, dozens of stories to share, and a trusted compass that keeps him connected to the people, places and things he loves in Oregon.
