We are your numbers people.

We are united through our love of numbers, and it shows in our work and our company culture. Precision in everything that we do, having strong communication skills, and building trusting relationships with our clients is how we do business. Our team is dedicated to getting things done the right way.

For many clients, running a small business is a family affair. This is something that Tim can certainly relate to.

“I worked with my brothers in a small business as a computer technician. That was when I first saw how important it is to have an accountant on hand. I hated to leave the business, but I wanted to pursue an accounting degree so I could be a trusted resource for others.”

As an accountant, Tim works with businesses across different industries, and helps them plan and build toward a healthy bottom line. Beyond the numbers, he values the opportunity to offer the type of advice and insight that can help a struggling business turn their fortunes around and begin maximizing profits for the benefit of their people.

“Keeping up with tax laws is a never-ending puzzle that I enjoy solving. In fact, the most rewarding part of my job is providing the type of due diligence that helps small business owners get some sleep and stop worrying about trying to decipher tax laws.”

If Tim’s dressed in business casual on your first meeting, don’t be fooled: he’s an old school playground all- star who grew up with a football in one hand, a basketball in the other, and a baseball tucked into the pocket of his team hoodie. And it’s likely that the logo on the hoodie was that of the Portland Trailblazers.

“I loved going to the Rose Garden when I was a kid, and I still jump at the opportunity to catch a Blazers game courtside.”

If you see him on the jumbo screen, it’s possible that he’ll be sharing popcorn with his wife, Jennifer, and the couple’s young son.

For Dava, accounting was something she grew up around. Her parents owned and operated a small construction firm. Watching her parents crunch numbers related to materials, equipment rental, and labor costs, Dava realized that accounting was a core part of everything a business does.

“Ever since I was a kid, I’ve enjoyed being able to solve problems. I still get excited every time I arrive at a correct set of financial statements. I appreciate the satisfaction of knowing things are lined up.”

While working with numbers comes easy to Dava, she enjoys being able to dig into complex accounting challenges that come up for people and businesses.

“When I was studying finance at Portland State, one of my professors helped turn my focus toward accounting. Her passion for the profession pushed me toward it. I feel this same passion in my work.”

When she’s not in the office, Dava likes to take her passion and love of challenges to the outdoors. You might find her hiking the Kopetski Trail to Opal Pool with her dog, Zoey, or heading to Mt. Hood Skibowl to snowboard. Even weekends in Seattle turn into adventures for Dava, as she likes to put as many miles as she can under her feet. And when she sticks closer to home, Dava likes to donate her time mentoring international students as they adapt to life in the region and the U.S.

I believe in working hard and exceeding the expectations of clients and coworkers. At the same time, it’s important to stay friendly, and treat people the right way. When your eyes are on numbers all day, it’s important to look up and smile.

Diana Sykes Enrolled Agent (EA)

According to Diana, she’s just “another employee” at Plus Minus Accounting. As everyone else puts it, she brings the glue, spirit, and plenty of brain power to the operation.

“I chose accounting because I loved numbers, but I could have gone into social work because I love people too.” In the end, accounting provided the best of both worlds—a chance to help people by providing key solutions that affect many aspects of their lives.

As a licensed tax consultant, Diana is a trusted, go-to partner for dozens of businesses and individuals. She provides the attention, perspective and solutions they need, especially when the waters are choppy.

“These are stressful times for lots of people. Some are selling, others are shuttering, and many people feel overwhelmed about their taxes. I’m attached to all of my clients. I want to see them succeed, no matter how long we’ve worked with them.”

In a world full of big dreamers, Diana doesn’t mind slogging through the minutia. In fact, she enjoys it.

“I love to dig around the details see what’s really going on. My clients appreciate knowing I’ll get my hands scuffed on their behalf.”

You might spot Diana just about anywhere throughout the state of Oregon, from a day-hike in the Gorge, to a Blazers game, or just browsing around the mall. And if you’re lost when you bump into her, don’t worry—she’ll point you in the direction you need to go.

Stephan Sykes Certified Public Accountant (CPA)

The rules are always changing in the world of accounting and taxation, not necessarily for the taxpayer’s benefit. To stay ahead, Stephan Sykes, CPA, owner of Plus Minus Accounting, operates his business by the types of rules that support his clients.

“First, we will always have the tools it takes to keep on the cutting edge.” It’s a credo he first encountered in the Marine Corps. “As a Marine, you’re told that if you bring the grit and the drive to succeed, you’ll always have what you need to get it done. That’s how we do things around here too.”

As for the grit and drive, Stephan and his team bring those essential ingredients as well. “We always battle for our clients. If they’re in the dark when they come to us, we’ll get them through. No one should feel lost at sea with their taxes.”

The entire Plus Minus environment is built around the concept of people helping people, not just crunching numbers. This core principle has been in place since Stephan opened his business more than 20 years ago.

“This is a critical point for people. Many of our older clients are facing retirement, while younger clients are jumping into the game for the first time. We’re a solution for everyone, no matter where they are in the cycle.”

While Stephan doesn’t have tons of free time, he does his best to explore the world. Recent excursions have seen him trek coastlines, countrysides and mountain ranges in the U.S. and abroad. If you see him on the trail, chances are he’ll have at least one classic book with him, dozens of stories to share, and a trusted compass that keeps him connected to the people, places and things he loves in Oregon.
